Mrs. Frederick - 6th Grade GATE

Hello to all!  I’m so excited to be a part of your transition into middle school.  There’s so much fun to be had during middle school, especially within your classroom.  Your core class will consist of language arts, social studies, math, and science.  You will be with me for four periods then switch to different classrooms and teachers for your elective class and PE.In sixth grade gate this year we will be exploring in social studies early civilizations of Mesopotamia, Egypt, and Kush.  We will investigate and analyze the geographic, political, economic, religious, and social structures of the Ancient Hebrews, Ancient Greeks, and the early civilizations of India, China, and Rome.

Language Arts consists of reading, spelling, writing, grammar and vocabulary.  We utilize Accelerated Reader (AR) at our school to make reading more effective.  To learn more about AR follow the link below: http://www.renlearn.com/ar.  Spelling packets will go home weekly on Mondays and will be returned on Thursdays.  Spelling tests will be every Friday.  In writing we will be working on strategies to write clear, coherent, and focused essays.  Essays will include narrative, expository, persuasive, and descriptive texts of at least 500 to 700 words in each genre.  We will be using the district adopted HOLT curriculum to assist us in this effort.

Our math goals for sixth grade are to master the four arithmetic operations: introduction to algebra, geometry, statistics & probability, and mathematical reasoning.

Earth science is what sixth graders get to explore.  This includes plate tectonics, the earth’s structure & surface, along with the earth’s energy, ecology, and resources.  This year we will be doing a science project!  What fun that is!

I can’t wait to get the year started and to guide you through this exciting time!  I’ll start the year off with one-on-one meetings with each of you, and your parents, to create goals for your year to make sure that you’re getting everything out of sixth grade that you wanted to.

Here’s to a wonderful year!
